Navi Pillay wins the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize; hours later the US sanctions the International Criminal Court

The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the 2026 Peace Prize to South African jurist Navi Pillay, 85, a former UN human rights chief and ICC judge, "for her efforts to promote peace and international law". Within hours the Trump administration imposed sweeping sanctions on the International Criminal Court, which called the move an "assault on the rule of law". Donald Trump called the award "disgraceful" and said he should have won.

Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan's firing-squad execution will be livestreamed, Pentagon says

The US Army plans to execute Nidal Hasan, who killed 13 people at Fort Hood in 2009, by firing squad on 3 December, and the Pentagon says the execution will be livestreamed. It would be the first US military execution in more than 60 years and the first public execution in the country in nearly a century. Legal experts say appeals could still delay it for years.
